This is the kind of book that the American mental health profession needs. For too long, models of therapeutic intervention have omitted or underplayed the role of culture in individual identity formation, etiology and expression of psychopathology, and assessment of mental health and illness. Albert Gaw and his associates have made a real contribution to this area of investigation. They have elaborated a number of the ways that culture influences the development and treatment of mental disorders and a number of issues that face practitioners who treat specific ethnic groups.
