Love and Hate in the Analytic Setting is one book that does justice to its sexy title. Unlike some other books whose content bears little resemblance to their names, this new book by Glen Gabbard thoroughly explores the passions of analyst and patient. Championing the experience of intense emotions in the analytic setting, provided that they are not usually disclosed by the analyst, the author urges us to accept the inevitability of loving and hating our patients as they love and hate us.
He extensively discusses all aspects of the erotic transference and countertransference, including a chapter titled “Love and Lust in the Male-Analyst-Male-Patient Dyad.” The case example that is the centerpiece of this chapter focuses on a male patient who develops an intense, and graphic, homosexual interest in Gabbard.
