In this slim volume, Francesca Bion has collected together three of Wilfred Bion's previously unpublished works and written a brief introduction to each. The book also contains an instructive foreword by Bion's late daughter, the psychoanalyst Parthenope Bion Talamo. The first of these works is a lecture titled “The Grid,” which Bion gave to the British Psycho-Analytical Society in October 1963. It is an earlier version of a paper published under the same title in 1977, and, although it is shorter than the later version, it contains material that does not appear either in it or in Bion's other major discussion of The Grid, Elements of Psychoanalysis.
