“I am one of us” or “I am not one of them” are both positions that wall off inner danger and hamper individuation wrought by mourning the primordial loss of symbiotic unity. The original real of the early mother, appearing in her absence, remains as an inner danger evoking self-attack or to be projected outwards onto needed enemies who can be made the objects of fear and hatred. To be called upon to renounce one's prejudice is to be called upon to face one's inner dangers and losses and to do one's mourning so that one can love, and when necessary, fight one's enemies for reasons other than one's own need to have enemies.
