The hyphen in psycho-social studies signifies both the irreducibility of the psychological to the social (and vice versa) and their complementarity, that is, the impossibility of there being the one without the other. In contrast to Stephen Frosh and Lisa Baraitser, the author argues that critique is not best advanced by the dissolving of boundaries and the blurring of differences. The retention of the hyphen insists upon the difference, a difference that can never be overcome, yet one which continually invites engagement and exploration.
