This article presents a detailed description of clinical work with an undocumented Latina immigrant living in New York City and a Caucasian-American female analyst. The article focuses on the patient's experience of being an immigrant as that of being second class or lesser than, and how themes of acceptance and rejection by her father and alcoholism in her mother intensified the patient's insecurities around her immigrant status. Issues of social class, gender roles and sibling relationships are also highlighted, both in general and as they played out in the relationship with the analyst.
