Ageism, like sexism, influences even the most progressive psychotherapists, young and old. The author points to a parapraxis in Dr. Pytluk's text that reveals a complex knot of attraction-repulsion to his older, HIV-positive patient. Suggestions are made to help the therapist move beyond pity and guilt. Freud's negative Oedipus complex might be useful in helping the patient understand his sexual trajectory.
