This paper attempts to articulate, in a preliminary fashion, the concept of death drive sublimation, a theoretical possibility implied in Freud's later metapsychology but never explicitly elaborated as such. In conversation with Herbert Marcuse and Bernard Stiegler, I argue that “technological mastery” allows for an expression of the death drive that may be considered “sublimated” in line with a definition I offer following F.J. Hacker. The final two sections draw out the theoretical potential of this concept by first revisiting Christopher Lasch's “narcissism thesis” and then by examining Marcuse's understanding of superego formation under late capitalism. I close by outlining possibilities for future work.
