Although Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate presents a careful analysis of why the fight over climate change will have to take on our current system of capitalism, her lack of psychoanalytic knowledge undermines her efforts to promote positive social change. Since she does not take into account the reasons for which people engage in self-destructive acts and fantasies, she is unable to explain why we continue to march towards our own environmental self-destruction. Using the Freudian concepts of masochism, the death drive, and the repetition compulsion, I argue for a psychoanalytic model for social activism against climate change and neoliberal capitalism.
