This paper synthesizes two studies by the Research Centre for Childhood and Adolescence at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the Research Centre for Psychoanalysis and Medicine at the University of Paris VII. The purpose is to analyze what creates the unease felt in classrooms by primary school educators in ten public schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and to understand the strategies adopted in the face of this unease, a concept we understand in reference to Freud’s definition of the term [Unbehagen] in Civilization and its Discontents. By differentiating the concepts of the organic body and driven body, the authors discuss how the position of educators facing the disturbance caused by so-called restless students may or may not go hand in hand with a medical model discourse.
