This article uses Ettingerian psychoanalysis to interpret Vivek Shraya’s photo-essay Trisha. I suggest that Trisha animates an Other sexual difference central to matrixial subjectivity. Ettingerian psychoanalysis and Shraya’s photo-essay invite us to wit(h)ness how subjectivity is borderlinked to Others and can, through transcription and metramorphosis, enable and support a transition. From the matrixial angle we may understand transitions to involve a trans-subjective trace that curls and knots identity to the subject’s Others and non-Is through a metramorphic trans-inscription and cross-inscription. The trans-subjective refers to “subjectivity-as-an-encounter” and, also, to an “enlarged subjectivity” in the matrixial. As evidenced in Shraya’s work, something of vital importance to life is being transcribed in the work of transgender studies, art, and culture more broadly.
