This essay is a theoretical inquiry into psychoanalytic metapsychology and the relationship between psychoanalytic metapsychology and neuropsychology. The intent will not be primarily to suggest any real revisions in metapsychology, but rather to see where two or three basic constructs truly take us, and to link together certain clinical, metapsychological, and neuropsychological notions more cohesively. The initial point of departure will be an examination of both classical as well as more recent conceptualizations of transference. From this review, there will be an examination of work from both neuropsychological as well as more psychoanalytic points of view that suggests a possible neuropsychological foundation to transference as reflecting a basic type of human perceiving.
