Clinical interpretation shares a number of methodologic features with structuralism and hermeneutics; for example, all three attempt to discover and validate meanings by focusing on relations rather than things. This report describes the methodologies, including interrelations, of structuralism and hermeneutics; reviews previous, largely unsuccessful efforts to integrate structuralism with psychoanalysis; and attempts to demonstrate that interpretive methodology and validation rely extensively on a structuralist hermeneutic perspective and approach.
