The focus of this investigation is the process of the recovery of incest memories in the context of a specific psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The meaning of dreams in relation to the experience of incest is drawn primarily from a self-psychological perspective and is considered in relation to the transferential configurations in the therapy and to the memory recovery process. A clinical illustration is used to demonstrate this proposed theoretical relationship between dreams and memories. Implications are drawn for the treatment of those who have experienced incest as well as for our understanding of the analytic process in general. Finally, questions are posed regarding the role of class and gender in relation to the issues raised in this paper.
