The life and work of Piet Mondrian have been of interest to earlier psychoanalytic scholars. This paper reviews and criticizes past efforts at understanding the relation between Mondrian's mature style and his personality organization, and suggests the necessity for a more comprehensive view that places both in the framework of art historical developments and the artistic tradition within which he worked. A revision of the widely accepted view of Mondrian's relation to nature and its impact on the nonrepresentational character of his work is proposed.
