I will blend the conceptual and the personal in this paper as I think that is very much in Erik's spirit, and the best way to bring out what he has given us. We are all influenced by innovative people like Erik—by their ideas, of course—but also by how they live in and with those ideas.
The memories, the connections with Erik, extend for me over many places. I have strong images of our meetings, talks, and long walks in Stockbridge, in Wellfleet and Cotuit, in Cambridge, in New Haven, just about everywhere it seems. But I think it seems logical to begin with a Tiburon, California, story.
I was sitting with Erik in that pleasant little swimming pool that he and Joan had at their Tiburon house, and we were discussing one thing or another in a vague way, when he asked, with his own special tone of curiosity, “Bob, tell me something. Have you heard about these ‘Jews for Jesus?’” I said, “Yes, I've heard of them Erik. They are a group of Jews who were born again in Christian fashion and are strongly attracted to Jesus.”
