This paper takes Winnicott's three realms of fantasy, reality, and transitional space and using spatial theory offers a reinterpretation of these zones. Bypassing conventional boundaries the paper explores how socially produced space constitutes regulated territories of inner/outer, public/private, primitive/civilized, and child/adult. Taking play as a structuring principle the paper investigates how the definition and allocation of space constitutes social identities and exclusionary practices.
