The following papers are a selection from the panel discussion entitled “The Return of the Dissociated: Psychoanalysis Re-Engages Society” from the inaugural conference of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy held in New York in January 2002. After the conference program had been put together and shortly before the conference was to take place, a group of gay and lesbian analysts made known their belief that the conference program insufficiently represented their perspective. The conference organizers then decided to invite the presentation by David Schwartz—and another (by a different colleague) that is not being published here—to this panel on social issues. Thus, perhaps not unexpectedly from a psychoanalytic point of view, a panel on psychoanalytic engagement, or lack of same, with social issues became the focus of an enactment on this very theme. We hope that the papers convey the sense of struggle that made this panel more than a detached intellectual commentary.
