In this reply, the author responds to discussions by Owen Renik and Janine de Peyer of his paper “Reclaiming Desire: Love Is Not Enough.” Renik and de Peyer alert us to potential pitfalls in analytic treatment, on the one side of straying too far from lived clinical reality and on the other of failure to anticipate alternative versions of relational configurations. The author contends that the danger, the Scylla and Charybdis, of emphasis on these poles is the potential to overlook a fundamental developmental and treatment trajectory that reflects two sides of human experiencing and of the treatment process, which together enable patients to take full possession of their agency and desire.
