This issue marks Psychoanalytic Dialogues' 19th year of publication. Hopeful as they were when they started the journal in 1991, Stephen Mitchell and his colleagues could not have anticipated their effect on the broader psychoanalytic world. In the years since, many original relational ideas have been widely accepted throughout the psychoanalytic world. The basic postulate that relationship is a core motivation is broadly accepted; its corollary, that countertransference and the analyst's participation in shaping the psychoanalytic experience are fundamental to therapeutic meaning and action, is now central to virtually every clinical orientation. Relational analysis has continued its broad integration of perspectives adjacent to analysis, linking with such varied fields as feminism, philosophy, social activism, and developmental research and, more recently, neuroscience, nonlinear systems theories, and queer theories. The growing interest in relational approaches has also been reflected in our increasingly international readership and submission base.
As always, the successful absorption of innovations leads to the challenge of where to go from here. As the relational turn has evolved and coalesced, it has been enriched by interchange with other analytic schools; at the same time, it has been subjected to scrutiny from both within and without. Like so many in our fast-flowing world, psychoanalysts are becoming more cosmopolitan: This journal's dialogical tradition seems well suited to the emerging reality that there is no longer a single psychoanalytic form or vision but rather a polyphony, energetic and inclusive when it is working well. In both format and content, Psychoanalytic Dialogues has defined itself as a forum for creative controversy. We welcome submissions from all the analytic persuasions, and hope that you will offer us your most forthright comments about the journal.
We are especially grateful to Neil Altman and Jody Messler Davies, with wh
