This introduction to the paper by Fivaz-Depeursinge, Lavanchy-Scaiola, and Favez points toward its key implications: The paper proposes a fundamental reorientation in our thinking about intersubjectivity, by suggesting that it develops in a three-person as well as a two-person field. Moreover, it identifies the origins of these forms of intersubjectivity in capacities that emerge along with the three-person field, rather than as a precondition for them. In addition, these observations substantiate Oedipal theory, especially those readings of it as originating in the interactive family context.
