The author describes the concept of divergent conflict and considers how this may help us to understand the issue of analytic self-disclosure. It is suggested that an irreconcilable conflict may occupy a part of analytic identity. Efforts to explore this topic, and develop an understanding of the immediate either/or conflict—our wish for omnipotence and our essential vulnerability—are considered from the perspective of the individual analyst and the analytic community.
