In this paper I make use of my experience as a rock guitarist to draw some analogies to psychoanalytic technique, practice, and education. It also serves to introduce this panel: “Race, Roots, and Rhythm.” The panel features contributors who are clinical psychoanalysts as well as some who are academic scholars, all of whom use music (blues, rock, reggae, hip-hop, and jazz) as a theme in discussing topics of interest to psychoanalysts, examining not only psychoanalytic theory and practice but also the interrelation of psyche, society, race, roots, and politics.
