This response paper explores the discussants’ questions about the role of dignity and value in analytic work. Utilizing a clinical vignette, the author highlights several key dialectics central to the therapeutic application of dignity—the dialectic between agentic and selfic freedom, the dialectic between uniqueness and universality, and the dialectic between conscious and unconscious valuing. An argument is made for the constant and inescapable role of valuing in analytic work. Far from being an impediment to clinical process, when utilized productively, this capacity can be seen as the main vehicle for therapeutic change.
