In this discussion, I reflect on Stephanie Pass’s paper (this issue) about her therapy with Tyler and his grandmother, a journey that entailed disentangling multiple harrowing narratives of psychic ruptures across four generations. Dr. Pass takes us on that journey, to create shared, symbolic meaning out of Tyler’s overwhelming and incoherent past, in the overlap of the imaginations of patient and therapist. Her paper underscores the crucial importance of witnessing, and the power of stories and storytelling to heal, to create meaning and coherence out of ungrieved loss and trauma.
