In this response to the discussions of Grand and Chalker, I extend the discussion of a social conscience and imagine what a political restructuring of society would look like. I also respond to Chalker’s critique of my clinical vignette with Beth by emphasizing that neither should the genocidal history of a culture be reduced to an individual’s dynamics nor should the three-dimensional complexity of an individual person and her history be collapsed into the culture of which she is a member or not a member.
