Motherhood is a great devotion and investment of self into the coming into being of another person. It is a crucible within which we are tested, since it seems to ask more than we have to give, particularly when our own development and self-protection has required of us a disavowal of the self we most deeply are. As the fertile in-between space of our psychotherapy deepens, my patient and I wrestle, in parallel, with the challenges of coming into being and the challenges of motherhood. And then, she faces a trial greater than any she has faced before. Her new growth is shaken like a blossom in a violent storm and my sense of my capacity as a therapist is shaken too. I explore our journeys through this trial and my own journey to find words for the experience.
