In his challenge to psychoanalysis to reach beyond its normative, binary, and homogeneous tilt, Rodríguez fruitfully employs the use of a both/neither lens. This inspired this author to begin by looking back at the conventional work of Chasseguet-Smirgel on perversion and creativity, and the long shadow it has caste on psychoanalysis and the culture. The author suggests that it is the very welcome widening scope of psychoanalytic practitioners, including Rodríguez, who are creatively rethinking, reworking, and enlarging our understanding of, not only perversion, but race, class, gender, sexuality, intersectionality, trauma, and mixing. The author questions whether we have inadvertently, or unconsciously, laid out a both/neither welcome mat, thereby discouraging potential future candidates with much to offer from applying for training.
