Hoping to further both commentaries’ spirit of collegial, insightful dialogue, I sharpen some differences with Professor Flynn while noting points of agreement. I wonder about rhetorical strategies that may blur such differences so as to protect established ideas, rather than create more theoretical and clinical versatility or lead us to modify or discard problematic concepts. In addition, I agree with Denis that my reading of the primary narcissism concept in Klein overlooks her move to object relations, while maintaining that she still prioritizes the instinctual world over the environmental. I generally concur with Professor Caldwell’s emphasis on active relations with the environment in the vital, personal sense of living-in-the-world.
