This paper examines the developmental consequences of a fractured, self-maintained and held together by physical restraints, which over time morphed into an unusual fetish that dominated S’s life. Although initially lifesaving by giving him the illusion of power over his tormentors—primarily his psychotic mother whose unleashed, manic sexual behaviors imprinted his mind and body—his fetish kept him embedded in a fixed and repetitive pattern of living in a frozen past that obfuscated a future of new possibilities. Over fits and starts to his seven-year analysis, S was able to leave the safety of his universe of one for the unpredictability of the relational world—no small feat given the enactment that almost ended his treatment. S’s split off affective experiences were accessed through the medium of his remarkable dreams. As our relationship deepened, he was able to open his arms to the present and changing future.
