Reading, again, Romantic Bonds, Binds, and Ruptures: Couples on the Brink evoked in me new admiration for Virginia Goldner’s comprehensive review of the scope of couples therapy. Goldner makes clear that when treating couples on the brink, and I think any couple, this work is significantly different from dyadic psychoanalytic treatment. She emphasizes that the intense engagement in the room is between the partners, however powerful her own internal response. Recognition of the conjoining of partners can actually relieve shame and deepen attachment. Most helpfully, Goldner discusses the fears and failures of adult attachment and articulates the thrill of repair after rupture, as a profound experience in intimate relationships.
