Virginia Goldner’s paper, Romantic Bonds, Binds, and Ruptures is discussed in terms of her important contributions to psychoanalytic couple theory and technique. I contextualize this paper with reference to her earlier, innovative work treating couples presenting with domestic violence. I emphasize the value of her integration of the social unconscious, feminist theory, systems theory, and relational psychoanalytic theory in her approach to understanding the mental processes and relentless enactments common to many couple relationships.
