This brief article reflects my shared enthusiasm of Virginia Goldner’s love of so many ideas similar to my own in my book A Relational Psychoanalytic Approachto Couples Psychotherapy, Routledge, 2014. In this commentary, I frame my comments through the lens of my book’s relational psychoanalytic approach. Its organization is based on three essential themes, all of which are articulated throughout “six steps,” with each step falling under a conceptual arch involving both symmetrical and asymmetrical approaches to psychotherapy. I close with an example of how I might engage Goldner’s patients “Bill and Jane” in disarming their battle to the death in therapy, involving speaking to them as if I embodied what my third theme refers to as the couple’s “relationship having a ‘mind’ of its own.”
