This paper presents commentary on Virginia Goldner’s 2014 paper, Romantic Bonds, Binds, and Ruptures: Couples on the Brink. It considers the ways in which ideas that derive from couple work and from psychoanalytic theory apply to a larger set of challenges facing the world today. One central focus is on the experience of victimhood and the difficult to resolve dynamics that ensue when both sides frame their impasse as almost exclusively the product of the other’s behavior. We discuss as well some features of couple work that differ from individual therapy and how that modifies the way the work needs to be structured and pursued.
