Through a cultural-historical contextualization of boyhood and the figure of the Child, this reply offers a set of theoretical queries in response to Cushman’s theoretical intervention, white infantilization. This reply begins with a discussion of the racist and colonial legacies of early psychoanalytic theory, developing this narrative into a broader discussion of how infantilization is simultaneously used as a tool to protect stereotypical white innocence while promoting stereotypical Black ignorance. Through a discussion of protectionist impulses that are associated with the figure of the Child as white and innocent, this reply advances a question about unchilding in the global political context, asking: what happens when the state is the perpetrator of white infantilization and nonwhite dehumanization? This response concludes with a discussion of clinical material that captures racial and gendered dynamics of infantilization, meditating on possibilities contained within Cushman’s theoretical interventions.
