While the psychoanalytic literature is plentiful on the topic of language, there is relatively little focus on accents. Accents reveal (and conceal) our class, caste, ethnicity, and place of origin. I argue that an analyst’s and patient’s accents play a vital role in the transference matrix. This is illustrated through the case study of a British patient and various South Asian patients. Two films are analyzed through the lens of colonialism, race, and class. Accents as markers of status, reinvention, and third individuation are studied in light of my family’s immigration history and personal identity.
