This discussion queries aspects of Jean Laplanche’s metapsychology and his distinction between psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Reflecting on Georges Bataille’s analysis with Adrien Borel, I imagine psychoanalysis as an impossible convergence of the lytic and the therapeutic; and invoking the idea of anaclasis, which Laplanche rejects, I provocatively wonder if psychoanalysis leans on psychotherapy. Michel De M’Uzan’s work informs the intertwined hypotheses that I attempt to illustrate by revisiting one of Sam Guzzardi’s cases.
