This discussion engages Sam Guzzardi’s Laplanche in the Consulting Room: An Emerging Paradigm for Psychotherapeutic Action to consider how analytic transformation unfolds between restraint and vertigo, containment and dissolution. I take up Laplanche’s language of metabolism, transference, and the sole hermeneut while pressing on the edges where the analyst’s implication unsettles neat distinctions between frame and field, center and periphery. What emerges is an argument for nonsovereignty as an ethic of staying with simultaneity – where binding and unbinding, danger and transformation, intimacy and dislocation occur at once, leaving the analyst and patient altered in ways that may never resolve into representation.
