Discussing the state of health care, a Professor of Medicine at a prestigious medical center says, “I don't talk with patients, I just look at the laboratory numbers.” Sir William Osler, a classical physician in medical education, remarked, “Listen to the patient and you will hear the diagnosis.” The Professor of Medicine impugns Dr. Osler's maxim. Now, the power of technology and numbers reveals the patient's diagnosis. The Professor quips that he performs “empathy” and “humanism” when teaching medical students and they don't realize he is performing.
