This book offers an understanding of the interface between quantum physics and the unconscious and presents a novel and fascinating way of examining psychoanalysis both as a scientific method and an art form.
It is a series of essays arranged in three sections with 15 chapters. Section one deals with quantum psychoanalysis. Section two contains theoretical essays such as reflections on spirituality and psychoanalysis as well as meaning and metaphor. Section three deals with psychoanalysis today, including psychoanalytic process, ethics, humanistic education, and issues facing the profession today.
Psychoanalytic theory is aligned with the new probabilistic conception of the physical world, introducing a new metapsychology to support intersubjective perspectives allowing psychoanalytic theory the potential to move closer to 21st century science. The author begins with the comment: “…Freud's revolutionary exploration of the unconscious—an area of psychic experience that shows remarkable parallels with some of the basic findings of quantum mechanics” (Gargiulo, 2016, p. xxvi). He discusses neuro-psychoanalytic research augmenting many psychoanalytic assumptions, but notes the danger with this latest development of an apparent “scientific” assumption of equating mind with brain. “Quantum mechanics models support an understanding of the impossibility of separating the ‘I’ from the world, the crucial import of the observer on what is observed and the acceptance of probability over predictability, thereby issuing in a radical rethinking of cause and effect…the reality of subjectivity and the enigma of
