An anecdote relates William Reich's visit to Freud when Reich brought his book The Function of the Orgasm as a gift. Freud weighed the book in his hands and said, “Such a big book for such a little thing.” Reich went on to reify Libido. He contributed an understanding of character development, types of character, and character conflicts within the body. Many left Freud's metapsychology and created a diversity of theories and ideologies that sadly led to psychopolitics.
Cornell shares his life with the reader and describes how he became a Transactual Analyst. He was excited by Reich's work and trained as a Reichian therapist. Not satisfied with only this approach and Reich's self-defeating insistence on “orgone energy,” he reached out to many authors and fused Winnicott, Bollas, and Reich in his clinical work. There are 13 pages of references, and the author makes use of them in quoting authors supporting his therapeutic use of the body in treatment.
