Silvano Arieti, M.D, was the first Editor of The Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis from 1973 to 1981. He was born in Pisa in 1914 and spent formative years in Italy, where he graduated medical school with highest honors. He migrated to the United States in 1939, escaping ethnic persecution at the time of Mussolini. In the United States he studied neuropathology and neuroscience at the New York Psychiatric Institute and Yale University, psychiatry at Pilgrim State Hospital, and psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute. In 1958 he joined the faculty of the White Institute and in 1961 was appointed Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at New York Medical College. He published numerous papers and 12 books covering diverse topics such as the psychodynamics of creativity, integrating cognitive sciences and psychoanalysis, and psychoanalytic treatments for persons with mood disorders and schizophrenia. His book The Interpretation of Schizophrenia won a National Book Award for Science in 1974, and his textbook, The American Handbook of Psychiatry, first published in 1958, became a standard worldwide reference, which was expanded and updated in several subsequent editions. He was President of the William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society, President of the Society of Medical Psychoanalysts, and served as President of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis in 1979-1980. In 2014 Italy issued a postage stamp to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Silvano Arieti.
