Fred Busch describes a recent shift in a number of psychoanalytic approaches that may offer an exciting area of common ground across groups and traditions. Influenced by the treatment of more disturbed patients, he suggests that analysts are increasingly disposed to working with unrepresented mental content at a preconscious level. He illustrates how the analyst’s countertransference can facilitate a process of clarification that helps a patient come to know his/her own mind and more deeply integrate the vital self-analytical function which psychoanalysis ultimately promotes.
