Björn Salomonsson discusses the clinical experiences that led him to consider the presence of early infant transferences. He describes the nature of “indirect” and “direct” transferences that may manifest in the analyst’s therapeutic relationship with parents and infants and the implications these phenomena have on technique. He extends his rationale for utilising transference interventions at the pre-verbal level and explains why the psychoanalytic frame is essential for identifying and resolving unconscious anxieties in the mother-infant dyad.
