To answer the discussants in detail would amount to writing a new essay on the place of the psychoanalyst shaping the new great society of the future. It would amount to writing an analytic Utopia, which of course is badly needed. Since this, however, is too big an assignment, I conclude with my thanks to the contributors who discussed my essay—and to Dr. Masserman.
Professor William Langer criticizes the narrow basis of this analytic study. From Freud's time on, sweeping and valid analytic assumptions have been made on just such narrow basis, which horrifies the historian, disgusts the statistician, but stands up well against the nagging doubts of time. The analysis of one asthma case or of a few national-socialistic leaders has allowed quite accurate conclusions to the psychodynamics of asthma or Nazi-ideology.
