I did not find this paper sufficiently stimulating. There is little new in it and I feel that as long as the author deals with the “development of the death instinct in Freud's theoretical thinking” he should have at least mentioned Freud's precursors and their possible influence. For instance, he does not consider Schopenhauer (whom Freud himself cites), or the famous passage in Leonardo da Vinci's Notebooks, or Metchnikoff's “instinct de la mort.” For details I must refer to my book Modern Man and Mortality, New York, Macmillan, 1964.
