(A misprint occurred on page 327 in Jean Livermore's comments on “Conjoint Therapy” [The Psychoanalytic Forum, Vol. 1, No. 3]. The correct paragraph follows.)
“To work on these fronts one must indeed give up the ‘exalted role’ and settle for being human too, for omnipotence is difficult to demonstrate in such ‘bright sunlight.’ To maintain it requires a kind of magic which involves not allowing the patient to observe too closely lest he see too clearly. Of course the patient, also, must give up his illusions that all his problems will be solved by his all-powerful parent; he will have to see himself as the adult (at least in part) that he is, with responsible relationships with other human beings. Both sacrifice fantasy. But then the discovery of reality may not always be totally painful; there is considerable pleasure in the mastery of it.”
