Migraine patients, according to my experience, rather than depressive, are obsessive personalities. As Melitta Sperling points out there frequently exists in them changes in their sensorial perceptions. In relation to these changes I have investigated especially those which are related to sight and above all the scotomata. I was able to discover (Psa. Quarterly, 1959) that the scotomata of migraine patients constitute hallucinations of traumatic contents which have been simplified and masked. These latent contents are often of a homosexual attack against the patient's anus, displaced upwards to the eye (in Spanish the anus is vulgarly called the “ass-eye”). In that sense the case which Melitta Sperling describes of the preadolescent boy who once nearly blinded himself by “accidentally” spraying paint into his eyes is most interesting.
