Dr. Hoppe's paper, which might better be entitled, “Fatherland Countertransference,” is a marvelous example of precisely describing all the relevant symptoms of a clinical entity but forgetting to diagnose the disease; or avoiding the diagnosis would probably be more accurate. For I am quite sure from his other excellent studies on various aspects of the German problem that Dr. Hoppe is expertly aware of the nature of what I would label “Deutsch Disease.”
In avoiding plunging into the center of this unpleasant cultural character disorder, one loses the overview necessary to not only understanding German-Jew relationships but also what the German nation was, is, and will be. This overview would not only be helpful to the comprehension, therapy and prognosis formulation for “Deutsch Disease” but would be invaluable to examining closely related subjects. For example, one cannot possibly approach the well known tragedy of the collapse of formal psychoanalytic training in America without fully studying the group German character of the old Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute, upon which the American program was founded; or Teddy Roosevelt's genocidal ultimate solution to the Indian problem; or similar government controlled programs in our country which shall evolve in the near future to militarily solve the Negro problem.
A limited attempt was made to develop such an overview in my study “Groupicide.” I will now try to superficially apply its concepts to Deutsch Disease; although I must observe in advance that any French street vendor or moderately accomplished poet of any race could probably intuit the meaning much better, being closer to the feeling reality of the situtaion and not burdened, as it were, with intellectually defensive analytic jargonese.
