Our colleague, friend, and fellow editor, Michael Franz Basch, died on January 28, 1996. All who knew Mike were shocked by the suddenness and untimeliness of his leaving us. But then Mike had always seemed to be in an admirable time warp. With his more formal style of dress and gentlemanly manner, he seemed to embody the aristocratic culture of a cherished Europe of a bygone era. Yet Mike was very present. He fully appreciated the implications of the findings of contemporary research in affects, infant development, and neurophysiology. By any standard, Mike had a brilliant mind. Remarkably erudite, he was also able to do what only a few true intellectuals can—he could communicate in a simple, direct, and precise manner in his superb writing and lecturing on psychotherapy. Psychoanalytic Inquiry rejoices that he was one of our editors from our inception.
